ALMOST THREE

Page history last edited by martha 1 yr ago

Here is another poem I wrote when one of my daughters was "almost three".

It's a long one, and there's a lot of rhyming going on.

I hope you enjoy it!

If you like this one, why not have a look at Almost Four and Almost Five!

Martha

ALMOST THREE

Something incredible happened to me

One day when I was

Almost three.

"Time for a nap," my mother said.

So I packed up my toys

And got ready for bed.

"I think I'll have a lie-down, too.

I didn't get to bed until quarter to two,"

Said Mummy with a great big yawn,

As she closed the light

And pulled the blind down.

"You can come and nap with me,"

She added in a voice that

Was so sleepy.

And on that note

She konked right out

While I just lay there

Full of doubt.

I don't kow why

But I really wasn't ready.

So I went to my room

To get my teddy.

We rolled 'round my bed

For a minute or two.

Then we went to the bathroom

For something to do.

I brushed my teeth

And washed my hands

And emptied my sneakers

Full of sand.

I put my teddy on the potty

And said, "I'm in charge,

So don't be naughty!

Together we tootled back to Mum's room,

Teddy promising me he'd get to sleep soon.

Then I carefully put my teddy down

On a pillow and under an eiderdown.

Teddy went to sleep right away

Which was fine.

But I had a problem

That was mine, all mine!

My mother was lying there,

Flat on her tummy.

Oh she looked so warm and cosy

Did Mummy.

But somehow I knew that I wouldn't sleep,

And I couldn't be bothered counting sheep.

I looked over at Mum with an interesting thought,

And ever-so-gently I leapt and I hopped

Onto her back, so strong and so wide,

Without knowing that soon

I'd be going for a ride.

For a ride through a world strange and new -

A ride on Mummy's back. Yes! We flew!

I remember after first lying down

On her back

That I closed my eyes and began

To lose track

Of the time and the place

Where we were lying

Until ... startled by the noise

Of a puppy crying,

My eyes opened wide.

In front of me I saw no ordinary puppy

But a gigantic dog with tears in his eyes

And a burr in his paw.

I reached over and carefully

Pulled out that burr.

He responded with a gentle and

Satisfied purr.

Then I decided to look around.

We were very definitely

Off the ground!

This was all very odd.

I began to sweat.

Why, my mother had become

A flying carpet!

Well, not a real flying carpet, you see,

For she was still she, and I was still me.

But she flew nonetheless

And believe it or not,

She was still fast asleep ...

At least, that's what I thought.

We were flying quite high

Near the tops of the trees,

When a little voice said,

"Please help me, please!"

We were heading towards

A huge evergreen,

When I suddenly saw

The tiniest thing.

It looked like a monkey.

I wasn't too clear.

"Mum, Mum," I whispered into her ear.

"A monkey's in trouble up there,

Be a dear,

And fly me up higher

So we can be near."

She must have sensed

That something was up,

For the next thing I knew

We had glided to the top

Where the little monkey, all alone,

Was dangling dangerously

Far from home.

Mum hovered while I took a look.

Then I tried my best

While the poor monkey shook,

To calm her down

And disentangle

Her tail which was caught

At a terrible angle.

It didn't take long, I'm happy to say.

Then the monkey said, "Thanks!"

As she swung away.

"I'd like you both to come back some day,

When I shall have more time to play."

Suddenly some cockatoos overhead

Asked me why we weren't in bed.

Just as I was about to answer,

A white cloud burst,

And out came a monster!

Not a scary monster, you see,

At least, not scary to Mummy and me.

But the birds flew off in a great big tizzy

While the monster smiled and

Made me positively dizzy!

I clung to my mother

Who had begun to dip

Left and right, like a sinking ship.

"You'd better go home," the monster said.

"Otherwise you might fall out of bed."

I closed my eyes tight

And imagined Mum's room,

Hoping that we'd get there soon.

Sure enough, when I opened them up,

I discovered that I was still on top

Of Mum

And very close to the edge

Of the bed,

Just like the monster had said.

Monster?

What monster?

I must have been dreaming.

Why, that means I was really sleeping!

I really did have a nap today!

All of a sudden I heard Mummy say,

"I had such an amazing dream."

I looked at her and smiled ... just like me.

When I was not one, not two

But three,

Something incredible

Happened to me!

THE END
