This is a counting poem - for five almost five year olds, for five year olds and whoever else likes to count!
Martha
ALMOST FIVE
Ask me how old I am.
I'll tell you that I can
Take the number one,
And add on two for fun.
One and two is three,
But three just isn't me.
I'm three and add one more,
Three and one is four.
But I am more than that!
I'm almost five, in fact!
Almost means it won't be long
Until I'm five years old.
Then I get to hear that song
Sung to me, I'm told.
I think you must have heard it too:
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to you!
I'm not exactly at that day
When I can very proudly say,
I am five years old today.
But I am counting days until
My fingers and my toes all will
Be the same as I will be,
Five years old, not four, not three!
Five fingers on my right hand,
Five fingers on my left,
Five toes on each one of my feet,
Count with me. Be my guest!
One, two, three, four, five
One, two, three, four, five
One, two, three, four, five
One, two, three, four, five.
Because I'm almost five years old,
I can count more than my toes!
I can also add a lot
Like all those number fives I've got.
Five fingers on my right hand,
Added to my left,
Makes ten fingers altogether.
Now what about the rest?
Five toes on my right foot,
Added to my left,
Make ten toes altogether.
Now I will do my best
To add up ten plus ten.
That will be my quest!
I think that I can do it.
I'm adding fives and tens.
The answer's coming to me.
I'll let you know just when.
Five and 1-2-3-4-5 is ten.
Ten and 1-2-3-4-5 is fifteen.
Fifteen and 1-2-3-4-5 is twenty!
Twenty is the number
Of my fingers and my toes.
And twenty is the number
Of the days I have to go -
Until there's no more almost,
And there will only be
A five year old who can count ...
A five year old like me!
